Cladding Alloys
The powder alloys we use in laser cladding: Inconel 625, Rockit 401, 410L, 316L, 420 and S2528 — and which one is right under which conditions.
The right alloy comes from the right question
What determines the result in laser cladding is not the machine but selecting the alloy that suits the part. Abrasive wear, corrosion, temperature, metal-to-metal friction — as the answer changes, so does the correct powder.
| Alloy | Type | Primary reason to select | Typical industry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inconel 625 | Nickel-based superalloy (Ni-Cr-Mo) | Extreme corrosion and acid resistance | Oil & gas, marine, chemical |
| Rockit 401 | Iron-based, water atomised (Höganäs) | Hard chrome alternative / wear resistance | Heavy industry, hydraulics, mining |
| 410L | Low-carbon martensitic stainless (~12.5% Cr) | Economical build-up, easy machining | General machinery, automotive |
| 316L | Austenitic stainless steel (Cr-Ni-Mo, low carbon) | Corrosion resistance and hygiene | Food, pharmaceutical, chemical, marine |
| 420 | Martensitic stainless steel (high carbon) | High hardness and friction resistance | Die & mould, pump shafts, cutting tools |
| S2528 | Cobalt-based superalloy (Co-Cr-Mo) | Erosion and cavitation resistance at high temperature | Energy, gas turbines, valves |
The powders we use
Inconel 625
One of the most corrosion-resistant alloys available against seawater, acids and aggressive chemicals. Withstands oxidation and creep at high temperature.
Hard chrome alternative / wear resistanceRockit 401
An environmentally sound and economical alternative to hard chrome plating. Resistant to wear under impact; iron-based, so cost-efficient.
Economical build-up, easy machining410L
An economical build-up alloy that does not crack after cladding and machines easily. Provides basic atmospheric corrosion protection.
Corrosion resistance and hygiene316L
A ductile and hygienic stainless coating resistant to pitting corrosion and acidic media. Cracking risk is close to zero.
High hardness and friction resistance420
Reaches very high surface hardness through rapid cooling during cladding. Minimises wear where metal runs against metal.
Erosion and cavitation resistance at high temperatureS2528
A cobalt-based alloy that retains hardness even at 700-800 °C and offers outstanding resistance to cavitation and gas erosion.
